CADETS

The Henderson Police Cadet Program is an official program of the Henderson Police Department designed for young adults aged 18–23 with an interest in law enforcement. The intent of the Henderson Police Department Cadet Program is to educate, train and involve young adults in police operations, to perform a variety of routine and progressively more advanced tasks while providing support to the department.

The Henderson Police Department Cadet Program’s primary function is to help prepare cadets for a career in law enforcement.

REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY

  • Graduation from high school or the equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and cannot have reached their 23rd birthday by the time of application (after the age of 20, individuals are eligible to apply for the position of police officer or corrections officer)
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada or “border state” driver’s license, as defined by NRS 483
  • Must have no convictions for offenses greater than a misdemeanor or for offenses involving domestic violence
  • Visual acuity must be correctable to 20/40 in one eye and 20/30 in both eyes
  • Hearing must be 30 decibels or less for each ear
  • Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check and a wants/warrants check
  • Must complete Security Awareness and National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) certification within six months of hire or transfer, and must be recertified every two years as a condition of continued employment
  • Desirable: Participation in the Henderson Police Explorer Program
  • Desirable: Coursework from an accredited college or university in criminal justice

CADET APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Submit application once job opening is posted
  • Applicants will be screened for qualification standards
  • Applicants will need to successfully pass the Physical Fitness Test
  • Structured selection interview
  • Complete personal history questionnaire
  • Background interview and investigation
  • Polygraph examination
  • Drug screening
  • Psychological examination
  • Medical/physical screening

ACADEMY

Cadets will be required to attend a seven-week academy at the West Henderson Police Station and will be taught various aspects of law enforcement. Subjects taught during the academy include, but are not limited to:

  • Report writing
  • Criminal law
  • Crimes against property
  • Crimes against persons
  • Domestic violence
  • Realities of law enforcement
  • Radio procedures
  • Computer operations
  • Mental illness
  • Defensive tactics
  • Physical fitness
  • Interpersonal communications
  • De-escalation
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Constitutional law
  • Sex crimes
  • Adult and child abuse
  • Miscellaneous laws
  • Radio traffic
  • Traffic laws
  • Crime scene investigations
  • Victim rights
  • Courtroom demeanor
  • Laws relating to drugs
  • Interview and interrogation

TRAINING

Upon graduation from the academy, Cadets will be assigned to an area command for desk and/or field work. Cadets will be required to complete an eight-week field training program.

UNIFORM

Cadets will be provided with the initial required uniforms and equipment to attend the academy.  Cadets will receive a list of uniform and equipment requirements upon hire.  Cadets may be required to purchase some additional equipment items such as a water bottle, watch and running shoes. 

Cadets are not law enforcement officers and are not POST-certified.
